Jordan Lake, North Carolina: A Stargazer’s Escape

Getting to the spot where the water’s surface meets the stars is an enchanting experience—and at North Carolina’s Jordan Lake, it’s a favorite pastime!

In today’s blog, we’re taking a look at the two distinct sides of this lake—daytime and nighttime—and sharing the exciting opportunities waiting to be enjoyed at each.

By day…

There’s nothing quite like an outdoor expanse where you can lose track of time, fish the day away, and discover something new. Jordan Lake has all of it.

During the park’s daytime hours, you can hit the water for a round of fishing. The underwater ecosystem is just as interesting as the landscapes above it, and one of Jordan Lake’s most intriguing features is its wealth of stumps and logs just below the surface, where you’ll find catfish, crappie and bass weaving their way around the aquatic passageways.

When you’re not fishing, you can slow down your pace and get to know the beauty of Jordan Lake. Keep your eyes peeled for the birds on your list, including the elusive bald eagle who’s been known to make an appearance at the lake every now and again. You can always take out your kayak to supplement your Chaparral, giving you a chance to get up close and personal to the edges of the lake or especially shallow spots worth exploring. Pack a picnic and make a day of it—you’ll want to stick around for the natural “light show” that follows once the sun goes down!

By night…

Here’s where the magic starts. The water you explored so easily during the daylight hours will now be transformed into a reflective surface for the stars above. Once every month, the Morehead Planetarium and Science Center hosts a free sky watching session for all to enjoy. Just come to the shores of the lake and look above! The planetarium staff will point out specific stars and planets (in March, for example, they plan to view the Moon, Mars, and Venus!), and you can enjoy the view from a one-of-a-kind perspective.

With monthly stargazing opportunities (and everyday fun on the water), Jordan Lake is a must-do destination for water lovers of every type. Take your Chaparral for an experience you’re sure to remember!
